University of Toronto Sustainability Kiosk

University of Toronto Sustainability Kiosk

One of the most enjoyable and creative projects to date. The problem: the hard-working and quite brilliant engineers in the Facilities and Services group at the University had been working away for 35 years making the campus more sustainable in a myriad of ways. But no one knew!

They opened their flood gates of information on us and before we went under for the last time, we came up with a way to profile the great work they’ve been doing. Working closely with Northern Village and a creative crew including a designer, illustrator, editor and truly amazing web techies, we crafted and designed a series of Did You Knows that cycle through a digital display which sits right now in the lobby of their premier LEED Gold building at 255 MacCaul in Toronto.

Then we designed a special interactive website for a kiosk positioned directly below the display. With the touch of a finger, the kiosk observer can dance through all of the sustainability initiatives from 1973 to the present, looking at them by category or by date, as their interest dictates. Moving further into the website, you can look at live information on building performance across the campus. Who’s using more energy than they should right now?

Thrilled with the display that profiles his group’s work, the Associate VP took it to the University president, who was likewise very pleased and impressed. This work will be profiled at the Governing Council meeting in June (the highest level meeting at the University) and entered into the next round of CAUBO awards. Stay tuned!
